On October 1, 2014, ICD-9 code sets that are used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures will be replaced by ICD-10 code sets. The transition to ICD-10 is required for everyone covered by the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently released data that included hospital-specific charges for the more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals that receive Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) payments for the top 100 most frequently billed discharges. The data shows wide variations in what hospitals charge.
