JAMA Network Open: Percentage Decrease in Excess Readmissions of 5 Targeted Conditions for Hospitals with High vs. Low HRRP Financial Incentives

  1. 45% greater reduction in readmissions for pneumonia
  2. 172% greater reduction in readmissions for acute myocardial infarction
  3. 40% greater reduction in readmissions for hip and/or knee surgery
  4. 32% greater reduction in readmissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  5. 13% greater reduction in readmissions for heart failure

Notes: "Association Between Financial Incentives in Medicare's Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program and Hospital Readmission Performance," by Geoffrey J. Hoffman, Ph; Olga Yakusheva, PhD. Study followed 2823 hospitals participating in Medicare's Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) from 2016 to 2019. Hospitals with greater incentives for readmission avoidance had greater decreases in readmissions compared with hospitals with smaller incentives.
