- 45% of 4,074 ICU survivors in 2012 had increased resource utilization compared to the previous calendar year.
- 30-day readmission rate: 15%
- 90-day readmission rate: 26%
- 1-year readmission rate: 43%
- The proportion of patients with a hospital admission increased from 29% in the year before their ICU visit to 43% in the year after their ICU discharge.
- Of patients with a readmission after their ICU discharge, 24% had an ambulatory care sensitive condition.
- 16% of patients had either an emergency department or inpatient admission, but no outpatient visits, in the year after their ICU discharge.
Notes: from an article entitled, "Impact of Critical Illness on Resource Utilization: A Comparison of Use in the Year Before and After ICU Admission." Resource use was compared for the year before and the year after ICU admission for 4,074 patients who survived an ICU visit during calendar year 2012.
