PCC: 4 barriers to oral health care

- The uninsured rate for dental insurance is four times higher than the uninsured rate for medical insurance.
- Of the 2.4 million emergency department visits for a dental problem annually, up to 70% are by uninsured and publicly insured adults. Many of these are preventable.
- Traditional Medicare, with 37 million beneficiaries, offers no dental coverage.
- Dental coverage for low-income adults on Medicaid depends on where they live. 11 states provide no dental benefits; 35 states limit coverage; and 19 states require a copay.
