- Projected physician shortage by 2032: 46,900 to 121,900
- Projected shortage of primary care physicians: 21,100 to 55,200
- Projected shortage of specialty care physicians: 24,800 to 65,800
- Projected shortage of surgical specialists (a subset of specialty care physicians): 14,300 to 23,400
- The U.S. population over age 65 is expected to grow 48% by 2032
- It takes 7 to 15 years for a physician to complete training
Notes: Findings from a report entitled, "The Complexities of Physician Supply and Demand: Projections from 2017-2032," the fifth annual study conducted by the Life Science division of IHS Markit, a global information company.
