5 Take-Aways from the AMA's Opioid Task Force 2019 Progress Report

- The number of opioid prescriptions in the U.S. fell 33% between 2013 and 2018, by more than 80 million prescriptions.
- Between 2017 and 2018, the number of opioid prescriptions in the U.S. fell 12.4%, by 20 million prescriptions.
- In 2018, physicians made over 460 million queries on state-based prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), a 56% increase from 2017 and a 651% increase from 2014.
- In 2018, there were more than 598,000 prescriptions for the opioid overdose antidote naloxone, a 107% increase from 2017 and a 338% increase from 2016.
- Over 66,000 physicians and other health care providers currently have federal waivers to prescribe buprenorphine for in-office treatment of opioid use disorder.
