Use of Duress Alerts for Threats or Active Violence at Hospitals in 2023: 7 Things to Know

  1. Out of 200,000 hospital staff equipped with duress buttons in 2023, 22,000 alerts were triggered requesting immediate help with an emerging threat or active violence
  2. 40.5% originated in emergency departments
  3. 40.5% originated in in-patient and surgery-related areas (admitting, pre-op, post-op, or anesthesia)
  4. 19.0% originated elsewhere (ICUs, critical care units, behavioral health, and non-patient areas)
  5. 20% more incidents occurred on weekdays versus weekend days
  6. There were 12% fewer incidents during holidays than non-holiday periods
  7. There was a 9% increase in incidents during full moons
